The manuscript view

Chapters are how you write. The manuscript is how you read what you have written — the whole book, in order, in one scrolling document.

What it is for

Three things the chapter-by-chapter view cannot do:

• Reading for pace. Scene breaks, chapter lengths and the rhythm between them are visible only when the chapters are next to each other.
• Finding repetition. The phrase you love is easy to miss when it appears in chapter four and chapter nineteen.
• Checking continuity. A character's eyes changing colour is a thing you notice reading, not editing.

Exporting

The manuscript exports as DOCX, PDF, Markdown or EPUB.

• DOCX is what agents and editors ask for. Standard manuscript formatting.
• PDF for a fixed layout — sending a sample, printing.
• Markdown when the next tool is a text tool.
• EPUB for reading it on a device the way a reader would.

Every export takes the current text. If a chapter is open in a live session, the export flushes it first, so you never get a version older than what is on your screen.

What is included

Only chapters, in their order, with their titles. Notes, character sheets and timeline entries are not part of the manuscript — they are the workings, and this is the book.
