Importing a manuscript

Bringing writing you already have into a project, split into chapters.

What you can bring

A single manuscript file in one of these formats:

Formatting that a manuscript actually uses survives — headings, emphasis, block quotes, scene breaks. Page layout does not, because a manuscript in this product is not paginated until it is exported.

The chapter split

Very few manuscripts are one chapter. The import reads the file, proposes a split into chapters, and shows you the result before anything is created: how many chapters, what each is called, and how long each is.

That preview is the point of the feature. Adjust it if the split is wrong, and only then import — a wrong split that has already become forty chapters is much more work to fix than a wrong split that is still a preview.

After importing

Imported chapters are ordinary chapters. They can be reordered, retitled, edited and published like anything else you wrote in the app.

What the import does not do is invent the rest of the project. Characters, locations and dates are not extracted — if you want records built from the text, that is AI capture, a separate and deliberate step you run on a passage at a time.

If it goes wrong

An import that produces the wrong thing is recoverable: the chapters it created can be deleted, and deleting is itself reversible for thirty days through the archive. Nothing about importing is one-way.
