Books

A project can hold more than one story. A book is the container for a set of chapters, and it is the thing that gets published: a reader in the library is reading a book, not a project.

Every project has a book from the moment it is created, whether or not you ever see it. While the Books module is switched off, that single book carries the project's name and every chapter you write belongs to it. Nothing about writing changes — the chapter list, the editor and the manuscript all behave exactly as they did.

Turning Books on

Switch the module on in Settings → Modules. Books appears in the sidebar with a list of the books in the project, and a book picker appears above the chapter list, above the lens reports, and on the publication screen. Books requires the Chapters module: a book with no chapters to hold would have nothing in it.

What a book carries

A name and a description. The name is what the chapter list and the pickers show.
A cover. Used on the book page and, once published, as the story's poster in the library.
Its own publication settings — title, description, genres, rating, languages, credited creators and the poster the library shows. They are edited on the book's own page, below its description. These used to live on the project; each book now has its own, so two books in one project can be published separately, under different titles, with different ratings.
Its own chapter numbering. Chapter 1 of the second book is Chapter 1, not Chapter 24.

Adding chapters

A chapter belongs to the book it was created in. Open the book, or pick it from the book selector above the chapter list, and create the chapter there. Chapters cannot be moved between books, so decide which book a chapter belongs to before you write it.

Deleting a book

Deleting a book archives its chapters with it. They are not listed separately in the archive — restoring the book brings them all back together, which is what you almost always want. Deleting an archived book a second time removes it and its chapters permanently, after the retention window described in the archive.

Turning Books off again

Switching the module off hides the Books entry and shows only the chapters of the first book. The other books and their chapters are kept exactly as they were and reappear the moment you switch it back on — nothing is deleted. You are warned before this happens whenever a project has more than one book, because it is easy to mistake hidden chapters for lost ones.
